Sustainable Laundry Made Easy: 4 Tips to Reduce Your Footprint

Sustainable Laundry Made Easy: 4 Tips to Reduce Your Footprint

We’re all trying to play our part in protecting the planet. Whether it’s ditching single-use plastic or switching to public transport, we’re all doing little things to become more eco-friendly, using sustainable laundry products could be one of them.

While washing machines have become more energy efficient, every laundry cycle has a carbon footprint. Long cycles, high-temperature water, skin-irritating detergents, and plastic packaging impact every load.  60% of greenhouse gas emissions from washing machines come from heating the water. Making small changes, like switching to an eco-friendly laundry detergent, using less plastic bottles or even just hanging your laundry to dry instead of using the dryer can make your laundry day greener. These tips and tricks make your laundry routine better for the planet – and kinder to your skin!

Sustainability runs through our DNA at House of Mabangó with every product we develop. With every product, we focus on making mindful choices, from eco-conscious ingredients to sustainable packaging. We also donate 1% of every online order to support Save Philippine Seas with their marine conversation and environmental education projects as a way of giving back to the planet. Read below for our tips and tricks for an eco-conscious laundry routine.

House of Mabangó- Sustainable Laundry Routine

1. Choose Sustainable Laundry Products

If you want to embrace eco-washing, the easiest change to make is switching to a greener laundry degradant. At House of Mabangó, our eco-friendly laundry detergent sheets are hypoallergenic and formulated with plant-based ingredients, free of parabens, harmful chemicals, and microplastics.

A greener alternative to laundry detergent, these sheets dissolve into liquid in just seconds and remove even the most stubborn stains. Our packaging is free of plastic and made with FSC-certified paper, sourced from sustainably managed forests. We’re always looking for more ways to enhance our laundry products. Just add a sheet or two to each load and wash as normal.

2. Load up your machine

Maximize your energy efficiency by filling your washing machine to its recommended capacity for each wash. This tip is a win-win as it should reduce your number of loads and your energy bills for an eco-conscious laundry routine.

Check the load size recommendation for your machine, as this can vary, but is typically three-quarters of the machine. Loading your machine up can also limit the release of microfibers, as research shows a lower water-to-fabric ratio can prevent thousands of tons of ocean pollution.

3. Keep your cycles short, cold and easy

Shorter, colder, and easier is the mantra for eco-friendly washing. Switch to shorter cycles at a lower temperature. Research shows that a 30-minute cycle at 68 °F is better for your garments than an 85-minute cycle at 104 °F. It’s also better for your wallet!

Your clothes will come out of the laundry machine just as clean as they would be from a longer cycle. Most modern laundry detergents are formulated for lower temperatures and shorter cycles.

4. Keep dry cleaning to a minimum

Although convenient, dry cleaning is not eco-friendly. Perchloroethylene (known as perc) is a harsh chemical used to professionally clean clothes, contributing to air pollution, water contamination, and hazardous waste. Professional dry-cleaning is also more energy-intensive than doing your laundry at home, adding to your carbon footprint.

Instead of paying for dry cleaning, wash your delicate garments on a delicate setting or hand-wash them to remove tough stains. Always check the care labels for advice on the best way to care for your clothes.
